SPRINGDANCE STAGE

EIM 2011-2012 (Part 1: Nottingham - Feb 2011)

The second edition of the travelling talent development programme of Springdance for young European choreographers, EUROPE IN MOTION, started in February 2011 with our partner Dance4 in Nottingham (UK). During their festival nottdance11 a group of young talented makers from all partner countries went into Dialogue sessions, after which they presented their work to a festival audience. After this edition, EIM will travel to SPRINGDANCE 2011 in Utrecht (April 2011), iDans in Istanbul (Oct 2011), Brut in Vienna (Feb 2012) and it will end again at Springdance (April 2012), each time with different participants (choreographers).

In EUROPE IN MOTION a selected group of young choreographers from four different European countries (UK, Turkey, Austria and the Netherlands) will enter into a weeklong discussion about their work, artistic visions, methods, traps, and share their ideas on the future of dance performance. This will happen under the guidance of two experienced mentors from the dance sector. After the dialogue sessions, they will present their latest work to a festival audience, who can meet young, fresh, new, up and coming talent.

The theme of this second edition is Mosaic Identities:
In Europe we are facing a time where, borders have faded, migration is a big issue, individuals travel all over the world and through modern media far away countries become all of a sudden very close. But although the borders within Europe are vanishing more and more, the ability of societies to deal with cultural ‘otherness’ are vanishing as well, giving ways to new nationalism. In the art world, and more specifically, in the dance world, the idea of globalization as a globe-spanning transnational network of exchange is already a reality. There, the national identity of work is often replaced by multilayered, mosaic, identities from different cultures and backgrounds. The dance scene is an international scene and dance artists move from place to place to work, study, live in other countries and work together with artists from different cultural backgrounds. Within this transnational work field, questions on culture and identity rise.
